Curriculum Policy
Introduction
We aim to provide a dynamic curriculum, which responds readily to national initiatives and school priorities. We meet statutory requirements by delivering the Foundation Stage Curriculum, National Curriculum and locally agreed syllabus for Religious Education. We customise this basic entitlement by the way in which we organise teaching and learning experiences within our school. Our curriculum is firmly based on our school values and aims. It benefits from partnerships with other schools, with the LEA and the wider local and national community.
Excellence and Enjoyment and Every Child Matters have profoundly affected our most recent curriculum review and development, and we continue to consider how these imperatives should impact on learning and teaching in the school.
Aims
1. We aim to deliver a curriculum that is broad and balanced, and which is relevant and appealing to our pupils.
2. We aim to deliver a curriculum which promotes and enables high standards in every area, particularly in English, mathematics, science and ICT. These, core areas are the “drivers” of our curriculum, with a key focus on continually raising standards for all pupils. Our curriculum is intended to provide an experience which is challenging and rewarding for both pupils and staff.
3. We aim to deliver a curriculum which is cohesive in its links, and flexible in its timings and emphases.
Curriculum content and progression is set out in discrete subjects or areas, and our cohesive and integrated approach to planning, allows for links where these are effective. We recognise that where links are effective they enable pupils to apply their knowledge and skills in one area to others, as well as bringing coherence to learning when complementary aspects are brought together. We meet the challenge of meeting all requirements, by making professional judgements about how to teach and when to teach, whilst rigorously maintaining continuity and progression in knowledge, understanding and skills.
4. We aim to provide a curriculum which is delivered in ways that meet the needs and interests of individuals, is focused upon personalised learning, and which uses Assessment for Learning to inform the ways in which children learn and are taught.
Flexibility within our curriculum allows for the diversity of children’s needs and interests to be met. Equal opportunities, and inclusion, are secured through differentiation, SEN/Gifted and Talented provision and integration of children, both from and to the Speech and Language base.
The application of ICT as both a learning, and teaching tool, supports the flexible practice we aspire to develop.
5. We aim to deliver a curriculum which is enriched by experiences in the wider environment and community.
6. We aim to deliver a curriculum which is effective in promoting spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development
Explicit aspects of the curriculum advance the broadening of children’s horizons, with specific reference to multicultural aspects, and viewing ourselves within a global perspective.
7. We aim to provide a curriculum which is instrumental in preparing children for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of the next stage in their education, and for adult life.
8. We aim for successful transition between key stages, and to inspire a thirst for lifelong learning in pupils and staff.
